As we know many of us look at January as a way to set goals for ourselves, many of them fitness and health related. If you've been reading my blog, or scrolling through my Instagram, than you know fitness is a huge part of my life. I try to workout 5-6 days a week for so many reasons! It reduces my stress, helps me sleep better and it makes me feel good. That being said, I still slack. BIG time. I can slip out of shape so quickly...it can happen within days! We've all been there...we lose motivation to go to the gym and tell ourselves, "I'll go tomorrow." But tomorrow comes and we find a million other things that we have to do other than go to the gym. It then becomes a pattern of tomorrow.
Someone who never lets me say "tomorrow" is my boyfriend and biggest motivator, Scott. He is a personal trainer and soccer stud. (He plays semi-pro in our area!) He knows what type of workouts to do and certain movements that target specific muscles. We don't get to workout as much together due to our hectic schedules, but when we do, I love every second of it. (Even when he works me so hard I can barely move). I feel that these workouts also bring us closer and we see each other in a different light. He pushes me and won't let me quit.
I am here to share with y'all some of my tips to staying in shape some of my personal motivators that get me up and working out! Below, 5 tips are listed...if you scroll down further, I discuss each tip in more detail.
- Set Goals
- Do Something You Enjoy
- Find a Buddy
- Remember the WHY
- Cute clothes!!
1.) Set Reachable Goals
If you haven't worked out in months, then set a goal for yourself that you CAN reach. This week I will do something active for 30 minutes, for 3 or 4 days or I will walk an hour 3 days after work. Starting off small is key. If you can reach it, you will feel better about yourself and feel better about setting harder goals in the future. If you set a goal like, I'm going to workout everyday this week after work for 60-90 minutes, than you may not achieve it, and sadly, will most likely give up all together.
2.) Do Something You Enjoy
Find an activity or class that you enjoy doing. You are not going to do something you don't enjoy. Your goals will become unattainable because you are miserable from the start. For me, I love lifting weights, spin, pilates, and barre classes. For others, those activities might not be for you. You may love running where as I hate to run on the treadmill. I get jealous of the women who can jump on the treadmill and run for an hour. You go girls!! More power to you because I just can't do that. I stop after 20 minutes - and that's on a great day. Pick something you like and go for it!
3.) Find a Workout Buddy (or Buddies)
When you have someone to work out with, you are more likely to reach your goals. You will hold each other accountable and you will find that you won't make as many excuses. If you do, your workout buddy will call you out and drag you to the gym! (Trust me on this). Plus, who doesn't love to workout with their friends?! Try a new class; zumba, kickboxing, yoga etc. You will sweat and have a good time bonding with your friends. I love working out with my girlfriends and Scott. It's fun because we push each other and help each other when we struggle.
4.) Remember the 'Why'
Remind yourself why you are doing this; why you want to work out or be more active. It helps to write them down in a journal or post them some place where you can see it and be reminded. It's so easy to say I had a long day at work, I just want to lay on the couch and relax. However, if you look at your list, you will be reminded of WHY you are doing this! You can relax after your workout. (Trust me, you'll feel better about it). A few reasons I workout; it reduces my stress levels and anxiety, I feel better about myself, I feel stronger, and I genuinely enjoy it.
5.) Power of Clothes
Who doesn't love cute workout clothes?? I know for a fact that having cute and stylish clothes to workout in makes me FEEL so much better. Even before I get to the gym. It is also a huge motivator for me as well. Ok, I've got this fabulous outfit on, now I have to go to the gym and show it off.
I hope my tips help y'all get yourselves into a workout routine of some sort. Let me know if you have any questions on certain workouts or any fitness related questions.
